JULY 2008 MEDIA ARCHIVES | COLUMBIA STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Recent graduate Jamie Anderson competed for a coveted slot into the College of Pharmacy at David Lipscomb University and was accepted. "Most people don’t realize that you can get what you need to succeed at Columbia State", said Anderson. "The majority of the people I was competing with had four-year degrees and I have a two-year degree." Anderson is one of only 75 students accepted out of 400 qualified applicants. Anderson completed one of several pre-professional programs offered by Columbia State. The programs prepare students for transfer to four-year colleges where they can enter professional career programs.

More than $45,000 was raised for scholarships during the Columbia State Foundation spring and summer 2008 golf series. Approximately 260 golfers participated in the three separate golf classics, raising money for the local campuses. The series was comprised of the Columbia State Clifton Campus 4th Annual Scholarship Golf Classic at the Bear Trace at Ross Creek Landing Golf Course in Clifton, the 16th Annual Columbia State Foundation Golf Classic at King’s Creek Golf Club in Spring Hill, and the 12th Annual James R. Moon Columbia State Foundation Golf Classic at Saddle Creek Golf Course in Lewisburg.

Columbia State is offering a 5K training class to begin on Monday, August 18 and run through Thursday, November 13. Instructor Gale Moore – who is also the volunteer Girl’s Cross-Country and Track coach at Columbia Central High School – will meet with participants every Monday and Thursday at 5:00 p.m. in Warf 104 on the Columbia Campus. While this class is a great opportunity to get started towards a goal, it also provides opportunity for personal achievement and enrichment. Folks who take the class will be prepared to run in the November 15, Alumni Association 5K race held at Columbia State Community College, and will receive a discount off of their entry fee.

The Academic Success Center, Student Development office and Enrollment Management committee has developed the "Right Start" program to help students start their college careers in the best possible way. The program is designed to encourage new degree seeking students to complete their application and all requirements early, then complete an orientation session which is followed by an advising session available throughout the summer.
